 * What Is Filariasis:-

Filariasis is a parasitic disease caused by thread-like worms (filariae) that are transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. It mainly affects the lymphatic system, leading to swelling and skin changes, especially in the limbs.

 Causes of Filariasis:

1. Parasitic Worms – Mainly caused by:

   • Wuchereria bancrofti (most common)

   • Brugia malayi

   • Brugia timori

2. Transmission – Through the bite of infected mosquitoes, such as:

   • Culex, Anopheles, and Aedes species

3. Lifecycle:

   • Mosquitoes ingest microfilariae from infected humans.

   • The larvae develop inside the mosquito and are transmitted to a new host when the mosquito bites again.

1. Asymptomatic Stage:

• Many people don’t show symptoms initially but still carry the parasite.

2. Acute (Early) Symptoms:

• Fever

• Chills

• Swollen lymph nodes

• Pain and inflammation in limbs or genitals

• Skin redness over affected areas

3. Chronic (Advanced) Symptoms:

• Lymphedema: Swelling in legs, arms, breasts, or scrotum

• Elephantiasis: Severe thickening and hardening of the skin and tissues

• Hydrocele: Fluid accumulation in the scrotum (in males)

• Skin infections due to poor lymph drainage

• Blood tests (thick smear test, especially at night)

• Antigen tests (for W. bancrofti)

• Ultrasound (to detect adult worms in lymph vessels)
