Chyluria Disease – Description

Chyluria is a medical condition in which chyle (a milky lymphatic fluid rich in fat) mixes with urine, making the urine appear milky or cloudy white. This occurs due to an abnormal connection between the lymphatic system and the urinary tract.

Chyluria is most commonly seen in tropical countries, including India, and is often associated with filarial infection (caused by parasites like Wuchereria bancrofti). However, it may also occur due to trauma, surgery, tumors, pregnancy, or congenital lymphatic abnormalities.

Common Symptoms of Chyluria

  • Milky or whitish urine

  • Passage of fatty particles or clots in urine

  • Frequent urination

  • Weakness and fatigue

  • Weight loss

  • Loss of proteins and nutrients

  • Burning sensation during urination (sometimes)

  • Recurrent urinary infections (in chronic cases)

Causes of Chyluria

  • Filarial infection (most common cause)

  • Damage or blockage of lymphatic vessels

  • Trauma or injury to urinary tract

  • Post-surgical complications

  • Congenital lymphatic defects

  • Tuberculosis or tumors affecting lymph nodes

Types of Chyluria

  • Mild Chyluria: Occasional milky urine

  • Moderate Chyluria: Frequent milky urine with weakness

  • Severe Chyluria: Continuous chyle loss, malnutrition, anemia

Diagnosis

  • Urine examination (milky appearance)

  • Ether test (fat confirmation)

  • Ultrasound or imaging studies

  • Blood tests to check protein and fat loss

Management & Treatment

  • Dietary control: Low-fat diet, high protein intake

  • Adequate hydration

  • Treating underlying cause (especially filariasis)

  • Homeopathic medicines are often used for symptomatic relief and long-term management under medical supervision

  • Severe cases may require medical or surgical intervention

When to Consult a Doctor

  • Persistent milky urine

  • Severe weakness or weight loss

  • Recurrent urinary infections

  • Blood in urine

  • Symptoms lasting more than a few days
